Hi, Dream in Green participant!
Welcome to ISeeChange. We are a global community of people documenting the everyday, block-by-block impacts of climate change. From community members in Nigeria posting about extreme heat, to your neighbors in South Florida tracking sea level rise and flooding, ISeeChangers put a human face to the effects of climate change. This allows local decision makers to identify and target possible adaptation solutions that can reduce your climate risks and improve your quality of life.
To receive bonus activity points, post to the Miami Storms and Flooding investigation five times. Your posts should be descriptive and include the words “Green Schools Challenge” in your post so that we can be sure your contribution is credited.
Some ideas for posts include:
- Post when you observe flooding during a storm, during a high tide, or during a storm at high tide. Write how high the water gets and how long the flooding takes to drain.
- If you have a rain gauge, post about how much rain you get during a storm. Tell us what the storm was like and if you saw or heard about any flooding in your area.
- Post about how flooding impacts your life. Does it make it hard to drive on your street? Does it infiltrate your home? How does it make you feel?
- Have a conversation with someone who has lived in your area for a long time about how they have seen flooding change. Compare what they have seen on the ground locally to data about sea level rise. Post about what you learn.
Your posts will be added to the record our community in Miami-Dade county is collecting. The insights about where people observe flooding and how it affects their daily life will be used by the City’s Department of Public Works to plan for how to reduce flood risk.
If you do not observe flooding in your community, you can contribute to ISeeChange by posting about other environmental changes you observe like air quality, invasive species and extreme heat. Though we don’t currently have a partner looking for this data in South Florida, your posts could reveal a problem that needs to be addressed through reporting, or by working with the City or other local organizations.
